Happy birthday Prof. Rontgen

A day like today, 27th March, and 177 years ago, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born in the city of Lennep, belonging to the kingdom of Prussia. He discovered the X-rays, a kind of very energetic electromagnetic radiation that would be extremely useful to characterize the structure of biomolecules. X-rays have a wavelength around 1 Angstrom, which is within the range of the typical dimensions of an atom. This characteristic makes X-rays able to establish very intimate interactions with matter that can be used to determine molecular structures. Here you can see a diffraction image and the structure of myoglobin, the first ever protein structure determined using X-ray diffraction by Watson and Kendrew and deposited in the PDB database in 1973 (PDB code: 1MBN)

Happy birthday Prof. Rontgen !!!
